Since the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) was created in 1987, it has strived to be a good neighbor. MWAA is involved with many local charities and organizations like the Red Cross, the United Way, Special Olympics Virginia and local hospitals.
The annual Plane Pull at Dulles Airport raises money for Special Olympics Virginia!
MWAA and its employees also work hard to help others who live far away when disaster strikes. In 2004, as you may remember, an awful, deadly tsunami (a large tidal wave) hit Indonesia and other parts of Asia. MWAA raised $4,454 through fundraisers for tsunami relief.
MWAA employees and faculty at Stone Bridge High School played a basketball game to raise money for tsunami relief!
When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, MWAA employees also lent a helping hand. MWAA helped Louis Armstrong International Airport to reopen in New Orleans, Louisiana! Employees with special skills like mechanics, electricians, and firemen also helped out along the Gulf Coast. MWAA doesn’t wait for a big event to get involved, though. MWAA also tries to make a difference throughout the year by teaming up with one of the community’s most important players –our public schools!
MWAA and local schools make a great team!

MWAA first teamed up with Carl Sandburg Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia (Fairfax County) in 1990. Since then, MWAA has joined up with three other partner schools –Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in Washington, D.C., Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia (Loudoun County), and Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland (Prince George’s County). Through the MWAA-school partnerships, all sorts of events and activities happen year-round both at the schools and at the Airports:
